The Shear

The silt in the Under-Weave did not rise so much as it accumulated, a slow, granular pressure pressing against the ankles with the inevitability of debt. Elara Culver moved through the Tangle, a labyrinth of frayed ends and loose selvedges where the city’s discarded fates hung like wet rags from the exposed beams of the old aqueducts. The air here was thick, tasting of copper and damp wool, a heavy humidity that clung to the skin and turned every breath into a labour of pulling. Above, the grey light of the Upper Spire filtered down through layers of cloud and brick, diffused until it was merely a suggestion of illumination, a pale, sterile glow that did not penetrate the deep shadows where the loose threads drifted.
She adjusted the grip on her splicing knife. The handle was worn smooth by years of use, the blade a thin sliver of obsidian that caught the dim light with a dull, hungry gleam. The Tangle was a place of noise, not the sharp crash of breaking wood, but a low, constant resonance, a hum that vibrated in the teeth and the bones. It was the sound of fate unravelling, a friction of intent against the fabric of the world, and it made her jaw ache with a dull, throbbing pain.
A man broke through the crowd of onlookers, his boots slipping on the slick stone of the walkway. He was small, his clothes patched and stained with the same grey dust that coated everything in this district, his eyes wide and frantic. He moved with the jerky, desperate energy of someone who had run until his legs forgot how to stop.
"Splicer." He didn't wait for a name; he shoved past a woman clutching loose thread, his shoulder hitting hers with an apology too quiet to land. He stopped before Elara, chest heaving, hands shaking as he dug into his coat. "I have the coin. The silt is in the floorboards. The shop is sinking."
