The purple vein pulsed beneath the silk, a bruise that should not have existed.
Elara Culver did not blink. She did not breathe. In the Hall of Knots, where the air tasted of ozone and dried iron, a Weaver who blinked had already failed. Before the loom stood Tavish, a merchant’s son whose destiny had been deemed insufficiently profitable. He was seventeen, his shoulders hunched in a specific, hollow way, his gaze fixed on the polished stone floor. He waited for the silence that meant he was no longer a person but a mechanism — and Elara did not look at his face.
Her fingers, cold and stiff with the residual energy of the weave, hovered over the inspection glass. The brass rim was warm against her palm, a stark contrast to the silver-grey silk she had just bound. She had pulled the strand from the spool with the practiced, silent efficiency of a surgeon handling a suture, crossing and recrossing the fibres in a complex, dance-like rhythm. The loom had hummed, a low, metallic thrum of fate being forcibly ordered, while the high, grated windows cast sharp, vertical shafts of light through the dust motes, illuminating the work without illuminating the worker.
But now, through the lens, the thread did not glow with the steady, uniform light of a healthy binding. It pulsed. A faint, bruised purple streak ran through the heart of the fibre, subtle as a shadow, yet undeniable as a scream.
Elara’s chest tightened, a dull, grinding pressure behind her sternum. It was the fraying. The slow, inevitable unravelling of her own thread. The Weavers of the Gilded Loom were expected to have robust destinies, thick and strong, but Elara’s was thinning, worn smooth by years of handling others’ fates while neglecting her own. She had learned to ignore the ache, to treat it as background noise, as constant as the drone of the thousands of identical looms that lined the vast, circular chamber suspended high above Norwood.
But this was not just a mistake. This was corruption.
