The Severing

The Culver Weaving Halls did not smell of magic; the air was thick with rust, stale sweat, and the acrid tang of oxidised copper. Elara Culver crouched beside the pallet where the boy lay, his complexion the colour of old parchment, his skin mottled with bruises that bloomed like crushed plum skins beneath the translucent membrane of his flesh. Above him, suspended in the dim, soot-choked atmosphere, his fate wove itself in a chaotic tangle. It was not the golden, structured spiral of a healthy life, nor the grey, flat line of the already dead. It was a knot. A violent, knotted mess of black strands that thrummed with a rhythmic, sickening pulse.
Elara’s fingers hovered over the thread, trembling not from fear, but from the sheer friction of the task. The Loom’s sensors were everywhere in this lower district, embedded in the brickwork, humming in the walls like a dormant insect. They were looking for deviation. They were looking for a Weaver touching what did not belong to them. She was a rogue, a snipper, a thief of destiny in a city where fate was currency. To touch this boy’s thread was to commit a capital crime, but to let him die was to let the knot tighten one inch closer around his heart.
The Spire’s hum vibrated in her molars, a low-frequency drone that had become so constant it felt less like sound and more like a pressure behind the skull. It was the sound of the city breathing, of the Great Loom turning its endless wheel, weaving the lives of the privileged in silk and gold while the poor frayed into nothingness. Elara closed her eyes for a second, focusing on the texture of the air. It was thick, sticky, laden with the chemical residue of the dye vats that lined the walls of the hall. The Culver Weaving Halls were supposed to be a sanctuary, a place where weavers of all stations could earn their meagre pay by mending minor frays, but in reality, it was a slaughterhouse dressed in rags. The air tasted of ash. It always tasted of ash.
