The air in the Spine Market did not smell of life. Instead, it carried the scent of iron filings, the metallic tang preceding a bruise, and the slow, wet decay of old blood dried into the porous walls. Sable Voss stood before the counter, her fingers wrapped so tightly around the collar of her tunic that the fabric creased white at the knuckles. Across the slab of polished bone, the Debt Broker, a man whose face was a topography of deep, calcified lines, did not look up from his ledger. He turned a page. The sound was a dry rustle, like the shedding of skin.
"Name, number, and the specific asset you intend to liquidate."
The voice was flat, devoid of inflection, a recorded tone stripped of all humanity. Sable kept her gaze fixed on the grain of the counter, on the swirls of ivory that mimicked the whorls of a fingerprint. She did not blink. Blinking was a waste of moisture, and moisture was heavy in this place, pressing against the eyes with a humid, cloying weight.
"Voss, Sable. Number 49-Alpha-Null." She paused. The silence stretched, thin and taut as a thread. "Three years. Taken from the end."
The Broker stopped turning pages. He lifted his head. His eyes were the colour of wet slate, devoid of warmth, assessing the value of her sacrifice with the cold precision of a geometric proof. He did not see a woman. He saw a subtraction. He saw a deficit to be balanced.
"Three years," he repeated, his voice a long, winding stream. "However, at twenty-two, the margin for error is negligible, and the Leviathan does not forgive premature depletion, meaning that if your body rejects the transfer, the debt defaults to immediate execution."
Sable’s jaw tightened. She could feel the vibration of the stone floor beneath her feet, a low, thrumming pulse that travelled up through the soles of her shoes and into her shins. It was the heartbeat of the city, slow and laboured, the rhythm of a thing that was dying but refusing to stop moving.
"I know the terms."
"Are you?" The Broker slid the parchment across. "However, protocol dictates I must verify the integrity of your remaining years, for a partial erosion will invalidate the transaction, and you must undergo the audit."
