The Bone Ledger

The chisel bit into the wrist before Torin could scream. Sable did not wait for permission, nor for the merchant to finish his stammering plea or for the lavender scent of his shop to settle into her nostrils. She simply acted. The blade, forged from the rib of a High Scribe, slid through the skin with the ease of a knife through butter. There was no hesitation, no mercy, only the cold, mechanical precision of a debt collector.

Torin’s eyes bulged. His hands, which had been trembling so violently that the ledgers on his counter rattled like dry leaves, now clutched at the air. He tried to pull away, but Sable’s grip on his forearm was iron. She had pinned him there, not with strength, but with the sheer, terrifying weight of her intent.

"The balance is due," she said. Her voice was flat, a line drawn straight across a graph. It was not a shout. It was a statement of fact, as immutable as gravity.

Torin gasped, a wet, choking sound. "Coin," he whispered, his voice cracking. "I have bone-dust. Graded four. Pure calcium."

Sable shook her head. The motion was slow, deliberate. She watched the blood well up, dark and thick, coagulating almost before it hit the counter. The smell of copper filled the air, sharp and metallic, cutting through the stale lavender. It was the smell of payment.

"Coin is invalid," she said, eyes fixed on the wound. "Marrow is the only accepted currency."

She twisted the chisel. The sound was wet, a soft tearing of tissue that was far more disturbing than any scream. Torin’s legs gave way. He slumped against the counter, his skin pale and translucent, the blue veins beneath pulsing with a frantic, dying rhythm. He was too terrified to move, too broken to beg.

Sable withdrew the tool. A sliver of bone, no longer than a fingernail, clung to the tip. She dropped it into a small glass vial. The sound it made as it struck the glass was a tiny, final clack.

"Paid in full," Sable said.

She capped the vial and slid it into her pocket. The transaction was complete. There was nothing left to argue about, nothing to negotiate, nothing to feel. The debt was closed. The entry in the book was struck through.
